I was looking for an appropriate Golden Girls quote for this post, but I couldn't really find one. This one made me laugh:

Liza Thorn, local spectacle and member of Cobain in a Coma on West Add Radio, hipster thrash band So So Many White White Tigers, failed rap project No Condom Whatever!, and the kind of defunct Curls (actually, they're now Girls and don't feature Liza at all and have a great new song Myles posted about earlier), is also in a band called Wildflowerz whom I thought were defunct but apparently have a new song up. Its called "Human Eye" and its pretty alright. Its like SSMWWT, but with, uh, just a wee bit of melody thrown in. Really, some of you might not even notice the melody, but I do and I like it. I was way into that other song "steal", so much so that I put it on a World Famous in San Francisco mix cd I made (if you want a copy myspace us! or email w o r l d f a m o u s i n s f (a t) g m a i l (d o t) c o m)

Also, they have a show on November 9th at "The Egg". Where is that? What is that? Man, I don't know anything!

Chris Crocker @ The Crib SF 10/25/07


As you can see in the video above, Chris Crocker proved his quote all too well on Thursday. The thing is, Chris IS talented. It's just that his medium is so new that it has not been acknowledged or even noticed yet.

Part of Chris' old shtick was pretending to be famous in videos posted on his MySpace. Most of his videos took place inside of his grandparent's rural house when they weren't around. His audience was the Internet; the wide, abstract and grossly impersonal Internet.

Not participating in human contact with your audience can provide a really interesting environment for an artist to develop. This kind of development has been romanticized in the art world forever. These personalities range from pretentious home-recordists like Jandek, to scared shut-ins like Henry Darger and countless other people probably including your mom. Outsider artists (for lack of a better term) are the one type of artist that goes unquestioned. Their motives seem true and their output feels authentic.

Chris' videos, for me, felt very much like a outsider artists' home-recorded album. His videos ranged the span of human emotion, they seemed sometimes... pointless. They felt lonely. They showed that same sort of sexy courage that we only posses when we are alone in our bedroom.

It was interesting to see Chris live at The Crib on Thursday. I realized Chris is now famous. I felt really lucky to see one of Chris' first performances on stage in front of hundreds of people. I understood his craft wouldn't translate to stage, but I was very curious to see how he was as an entertainer. His performance felt rehearsed but determined. It was fun and fanatical. It was new and nerdy. I loved it. This new generation is much different than my own. They didn't have their mind blown by Kurt Cobain or The Chronic. Something else happened that we're not aware of yet. It may have something to do with the Internet.

I thoroughly enjoyed spending the night locked in the club with my art/business partner Aaron. We didn't buy any drinks for the nineteen year olds who asked. We leaned around and people-watched just as fathers do when they become overwhelmed by shopping malls. We felt old.

Like the Twilight Zone, The Vortex Room is some kind of dimensional portal giving us a glimpse of the other side... conventiently located in SOMA and with seriously good drinks.

Last weekend they showed The Car and on Halloween is Psychomania. This weekend they're having a Halloween party and you can be sure that will be fun. Just look through their comments, this is the only place some people feel safe taking off their tin foil hats!

Chris Crocker - Nose pickin'





For me, Chris Crocker represents a huge shift in 'punk rock' (for lack of a better term). I believe if I were an angry teenager growing up in the middle of nowhere in 2008, I would not start a punk band - instead I would be making provocative YouTube videos. Right now, Chris Crocker is my favorite band... even though he doesn't make music.

Watching Chris' contagious videos convinced me that making an ass of one's self on the Internet is a good idea. He inspired me to make my own idiotic videos. Chris changed the way I think about the Internet. He taught me that the Internet is anything I want it to be. I can't wait to see Chris Thursday on his first visit to San Francisco. I have no idea what he is going to do, but it will be fun. I'll be hanging out amongst the lovely Monistat who is host for the evening. You shouldn't miss this either.

I'm totally getting my hopes up. This flyer looks like the magazines I bought when I was sick. It's amazing.

Our friend Cole gave us the heads up that the floating corpses were playing the Clarion Alley Street Fair this past weekend, and we're so glad he did. This was a super fun show. The mission punks were having a great time, the weather was nice, and floating corpses and their brand of goth/punk/drag with squealing, distorted keyboard and falsetto vocals were extra great. Maybe its because they have a new drummer, or maybe it was because it was such a nice day, or maybe its just because this band is extra great.

If you missed them on Sunday, you can totally see them this Thursday at The Eagle. It was so fun I'm thinking of going again!

Bay Area rapper Tequila blogs about where she got her name.

IF I GOT A NICKEL FOR EVERYONE THAT ASSUMES I AM TILA TEQUILA I WOULD BE PAID!!!!!! HOWEVER, MY REAL BIRTH NAME IS TEQUILA, AND I WAS RAISED BY SOUTHERN BAPTIST PARENTS THAT DID NOT KNOW TEQUILA WAS A DRINK WHEN THEY NAMED ME TEQUILA.

I guess its appropriate that Carletta Sue Kay was on the bill at Club Chuckles, a comedy night hosted by the Hemlock, last week. Just look at that big dumpy dress she wears, that's got to be a joke. Right? Or, maybe, its because this Appalachian folkstress' (I made up a word!) cabaret stylings and songs about relationships gone bad fit right in this evening. I mean, there's always laughs to be had about relationships gone bad.

Supposedly, Carletta draws her inspiration from the time she spent serving time in Iowa for trying to blow up her boyfriend's house and possession of terrorist materials, but that just sounds like a cover story. Carletta made an appearance on the scene, suddenly, after her cousin Emile vanished. Perhaps this is just another in his long line of plastic surgeries? Either way, Carletta has tons of material to fuel her songs, and you know she's speaking from the heart when she sings "Love ain't love until someone calls the cops".

Whatever the deal is, Carletta was in fine form at the hemlock. First of all, they did a pretty cool Jesus and Mary Chain cover (but I guess that's just in the air, what with their two shows this weekend) which made me smile. But, also, stripped down to a three piece, the instrumentation didn't overwhelm the songs (which I felt it did other times I'd seen this band) and the focus fell squarely on the vocals, which is where it ought to be.

I've been listening to The Peppermints for ten years. They are definitely one of my favorite bands. I met Emmy through a friend way back in high school. Emmy was from San Diego, in this band called The Peppermints, and the one of the coolest dressed girls I had ever seen in my life. Emmy gave me a long cassette of some demos they had made. I ended up putting some of the songs on a punk compilation I made in high school. Their demo was amazing and is still one of my most treasured pieces of music.

The Peppermints are now scattered throughout North America (but still active I'm sure) which is a good thing. I get the feeling they exhausted the San Diego scene. I ran into one of the people who book for Scolari's Office a couple years ago at a house party here in San Francisco. I mentioned The Peppermints and how excited I was that their album, Jesüs Chryst, was being released on Paw Tracks. She replied with "yeah but The Peppermints suuuuuuck" in a squinty eyed almost about to spew kind of way.

I love you Peppermints! I hope the wildfire burns that bitch from Scolari's Office and not you!

Which critically acclaimed, much loved local band actually stops in the middle of rehearsal to discuss the latest Harry Potter novel?

Which bassist for a now defunct local band that was big on the scene throughout 2007 fessed up to a one night stand with a famous TV commercial personality. Here' a hint, the bassist is actually Polish and not Latino. The TV personality? I made a promise not to tell, and when I make a promise not to tell "I guarantee it!"



Which band is on the outs in L.A? Seems there are two sides to the indie rock fence in the City of Angels. On one side are those that do meth, and on the other are the kids I'm referring to here. Not that it matters, they just made their own scene on the meth free side of the fence where there's plenty of fans and other stuff to put up your nose.

Which local DJ always seems to be drunk? (No, not all of them!?) There's one in particular who's been standing out lately.

Which monthly club has been pulling in a tiny tiny crowd? Rumour has it you could count the attendees at this months soiree on one hand, not that it was the headlining bands fault, I hear they were quite good.

Which now defunct local band with a stormy history has been hinting around about reforming? It will be interesting to see who actually signs up.

Tonight WAY out at the Retox burner lounge is "the first istallment of Hasenland." Something tells me this night is too cool for me... because I don't get it. Go ahead and take the T-line to third street if you want. I guess the hipsters will ride their bikes there. Primo will be playing Italo and space disco upstairs... which is worth seeing. I'd go but...

I'm sick at home with magazines. I've got Us and the People Style Watch issue.

Check out the debut Girls song "Lust for life." I think it's better than the Iggy Pop song of the same name. You can listen to it over and over. It reminds me of that Adolescents song "Kids Of The Black Hole" for some reason, don't ask me why, but with even better nonsensical lyrics.

And there is more where this came from! I've heard the follow up single... and it rules.

Tonight is goth night at LADY! And while goths aren't that fun, LADY always is! And Carletta Sue Kay totally rule - so go see them on Thursday.

Big Blue Whale need to chill
Six months ago my band was entered along with Big Blue Whale (pictured above) in The Deli Magazine SF's band of the month competition.

My band, The Passionistas, decided to make a series of YouTube videos to promote the contest called "Haterz Beware." We made the videos because that's what our favorite band would have done if put in the similar situation. At the time I was obsessed with Chris Crocker of the recent "leave Britney alone" fame. I was astonished by his popularity and decided to mock his style of hater themed video monologues.

Pretty much everyone got the joke, except some of the bands we were competing against. My initial hope was that our videos would inspire these other normally pretentious and humorless bands into making fun videos too. Well, none of them did. What ended up happening is some took it as seriously as humanly possible. Here is a comment Ashley from Big Blue Whale left on The Deli today (six months after the fact):  

I think it was your band, the Passionistas, who erroneously told the SF Chronicle that your band was victorious in the Deli's monthly poll, when we actually bested you friendly folks by about 300 votes. I shouldn't even mention all of the hate messages you sent the other bands throughout the contest.

Kanye West loves to storm award shows and claim victory even when he doesn't win. To me, it was so obvious that we were copying Kanye West. I hate the idea that "inde" has all these manners that completely prevent staged drama or conflict. What people fail to realize is that this drama motivates people to listen, pay attention and buy records. Maybe I'd rather be in a soap opera than a jam band. Or maybe I'm more at home at the top of the pops than in this scene.

How can you not??? Elton and Myles are too modest to post here about their own shows so once again I'm here to tell you all about their awesome shows. Hard Place and The Passionistas under the same roof at Smile! After having gone to all these theme parties down in LA (like this or this), I'm thinking about how we really need one up here. So, I haven't discussed this with the club or the bands and I'm totally making this up, but this show is totally the "Wet Dream Before Halloween" party, so dress like that! Oh, OK. I'll stop.

Me personally, I'd like to apologise to all of my fans, lately I've had to devote energy finding a new and healthier job so I haven't been posting nearly as much as i've liked.

The old job was stressing me out big time, one of my last projects was wrapping 12 AC Transit buses for Chevron. Chevron has sponsored 12 Green AC Transit Buses and wanted to label them Test Vehicle, much to my amusement the buses are now out and about and when the doors open, the bus goes from being a "Test Vehicle" to comething completely different. Oops! It's probably a really good thing I found a new job.

I've been going through my cds, lately, in an effort to slim down that collection. I came across an album by a band called The Rondelles which I had pretty much no memory of purchasing. I liked the girl group throw back name, but was a little wary of the Teen Beat imprint. I threw it in and quickly decided it was a keeper -- definitely ninties college indie stuff, but true to their name it has shades of girl group stuff throughout.

I lent it to my friend chriso and he told me that the front woman from The Rondelles had a new band called The Foxx and they were playing this week at The Hemlock. Oooh, creepy coincidence! The Foxx's top 8 features The Cuts and Gris Gris (in fact, Greg Ashley produced their new album) and their show at the Hemlock was with Bart Davenport and Sam Flax Keener (who, in fact, did the album art for the foxx's new record). The Foxx is from Albuquerque but they have some kind of serious bay area hookup so I think that makes them fair game for this blogggg.

Up first was Bart. Word on the street is he thinks this blog is too negative for some reason. Well, we feel bad about that because Bart is really nice and super supportive of whats going on in the bay area (I couldn't help but notice he was up front and dancing for all the bands at this show). While I'm not the biggest fan of Bart's recorded output, I do like seeing him play out. I think he was playing a lot of new stuff tonight and mentioned he's working on a new record. He's a great performer and those songs really shine when he's up on the stage by himself.

Next was Sam Flax & The Higher Color and I was not prepared for how good this band was. Sam makes an appearance in 5 guys by actually huizenga (and hard place too, actually) but he was rocking more Eno in his look than Bowie this night (its ok, affordable Bowie style is coming to Target). Holy glam rock! The emphasis was on rock though, although informed by some kind of weirdo early eighties art rock (maybe there was more Bowie than I thought). They hit the stage and their set was over before I knew it. I can't wait for them to play again.


Last was The Foxx and it was a harder sell than I thought it was going to be, but they won me over eventually. I was disappointed because the song frenchy over on their myspace is some sort of Cheap Trick inspired power pop gem, but when you get down to it thats not really what this band sounds like. A lot more rock and roll, and rock and roll that hangs out at the bar a little too much at that. But oh man, these guys rip it up. This was one of the most fun shows I've been to lately. It was some kind of rock 'n roll talent show going on at the Hemlock this evening. Just look at how they were dressed!

Tonight I will see Port O'Brien at Bimbos. Port O'Brien frontman Van Pierszalowski and I go way back. We grew up together in this tiny pretentious village set in a pine forest by the sea known as Cambria. We've reconnected over this past year after realizing we were both on similar paths... we're both trying to make our life's work, music, a career - starting in the Bay Area.

Van and I have a very different approach to our life and art. Van loves the little town we grew up in - his girlfriend's name is even Cambria - and she's also a member of the band. Van loves his parents - actually naming the band after the port in Alaska where they met. Van loves nature. He writes on the boat he works aboard during the Alaskan summers.

I really don't like that little town we grew up in. When I go home it feels like I'm in a desert with no water... one that is host to all my bad memories and frustration. I don't have the same appreciation for nature that Van does. I feel lonely in nature. I will take a man-made landscape over a natural one any day. I love human invention more than mother nature's. I love my parents, but don't really like them. I would never name my band after them. I obviously haven't forgiven my parents yet. I know they tried the best they could... enough already! For now, I'll just stick to sleeping with guys twice my age. I can make amends to my parents on Oprah.

But Van and I DO share a lot of things in common. We both like Lily Allen. We both were very lucky to have liberal parents that traveled and appreciated art. We were very lucky to have Mr. O'Neil as a music teacher. We were lucky in the sense that our town didn't have any culture beyond blown glass and beeswax candles. We learned to make music to make up for the lack of a movie theater or radio station.

I am really excited to see what adventures lay ahead for Van and I. The Passionistas and Port O'Brien are two totally different takes on life. It's funny to look back ten years ago and remember our similar sounding punk bands. In general, it's funny we're from the same place and doing the same thing. Van's music is getting a lot more attention than mine. But I'm not sweating that at all, I love watching one of my homies make it.

Those boys (and gal) know their audience. I did actually make an appearance at the club, but after the bands and the drag queens and the general faggotry. Even though it was late (by San Francisco standards that is) the gays still seemed to be out -- so it seems I wasn't out past the general buggery. There was a pretty good dj downstairs playing some standard eighties fare (siouxie and the like) but I heard some Opal and that was cool. Upstairs was this other DJ and his fall out boy record collection -- I don't really know what that could have been about, some kind of ironic fraternity boy worship? -- and I needed to get away from that fast but Myles and I were asked to pose for gay.com. Completely absurd, we can't wait to see what that looks like!

Who is this girl? And why does she have pictures of herself in a bathing suit all over her MySpace page? What's with these old timey photos? She is seriously trying WAY too hard to be eccentric. Girls from the suburbs need to stop fabricating Ghost Worldian lifestyles. We'd all appreciate you suburban types if you JUST WENT WITH IT and wore those Kirkland Signature jeans. Can somebody flag this? Kids aren't supposed to be on MySpace.

Oh boy! More low light photos from my point and click. Myles, elton, and I all ventured out to check out the re-appearance of Dealership and the Retox Lounge. The show was downstairs which was decorated to look like an airplane flying in a storm. A side panel from an airplane lined the room and business class seats along two of the walls. I thought it looked kinda ok, but Myles thought it looked like some kind of burning man installation and google confirms that the Retox is some kind of 'burner' lounge. I'm slightly horrified to have liked something that could be a burning man installation, but come on, it wasn't anything like this. Right? I like it out on third street though, more venues here please!

Anyway, we missed The Attachments. Dealership has a new member, so now they're a four piece which means a fuller sound and indie rock quiet loud dynamics. I used to really like these guys, but I've kinda tapped out on that whole college/indie sound. Its so serious! Even though I wasn't as into them as I used to be, these guys do what they do really well. If you like the indie rock though, go see them!



We couldn't stick around for all of the Sweetie set, but Myles and Elton thought their drummer was great.

Is it just me, or does pitchfork need to open up a reader forum so I can occasionally complain about the crappy music they continually push. You know what I mean, this indie music with choruses full of rowdy/drunken/hopeful/defiant actual choruses of people shouting out over music that has had too many instruments added to it for its own good.

Maybe I woke up on the wrong side of the bed (or maybe I should stop reading pitchfork in the morning), but I was looking around at bay area music blogs like the owl, the bay bridged, and the deli and they all looked like mini pitchforks to me, even if they do focus on bay area music. I'm sure the people running these blogs are perfectly nice people just doing their thing (isn't everybody?), but it annoys me that pitchfork seem to be the tastemakers.

Poking around the deli a little more I came across this:

The primary goal of The Deli is to expose SF based musical artiststhat have not yet reached a level of international fame.

Ok, cool. There are tons of bands in the city who could use more exposure. The band of the month contest is fun (I think). The list of bands is along the right hand side of the main page is great (but I can think of more than a few local staples that are missing). Same for the list of labels on the left.

But then I looked at the "HOT IN SF NOW" section and I saw Deerhoof listed. Ok, fair. Those kids are hot, they have it going on. And I think Deerhoof is a really great band. But I checked -- those guys definitely have an international level of fame. They're constantly playing those ATP festivals, they played with the Roots, Radiohead, the Flaming Lips (and many more I'm sure), Tomlab releases their records in europe, The Wire consistently writes about this band... oh need I go on? Maybe they should come down off the list for some other band who can't even get more than thirty plays a day on their myspace page. Can you imagine??

I also came across this:

CD Submission Policy
The Deli SF only reviews music from Bay Area based artists. Please submit your CDs via mail only if they have proper packaging (we won't review CD-Rs with hand-written titles)

And this I don't get. Local album reviews are great, but they won't accept a CDR? I know its hard to wade through a pile of CDRs, but come on! If the mission is to expose bay area artists this seems counter-intuitive -- only bands who can afford a small run pressing of their music will be considered? Perhaps I'm being too harsh? Perhaps I don't know what 'proper' packaging is. Perhaps all these guys mean is stick a label on your CDR? Perhaps I'm too literal minded -- I know all my boyfriends say so!

I don't know about all that, but you know what? All you bands with CDRs with handwritten faces send them over here to world famous, we'll try and review them!

So if you're singing to a stuffed raccoon in your video, you've kinda already won. People wonder why I don't like "inde bands." It's because they're never able to make a video as awesome as Hard Place. They're also not smart enough to make web 2.0 jokes with their video descriptions and tags. God inde rock. Grow an iPhone for a brain already. hel~lo. Long live Hard Place and all their painfully nostalgic flashbacks and dream sequences.

I don't understand Dealership. They seem really put together and good looking, but i dunno:

• They have a fancy website which they don't update anymore. It was last updated about a year ago, and then a year before that. I guess current internet trends have taken their toll as they do have active myspace profile and, um, a wikipedia entry. Which is cool, but if I had put that much work into the website I'd be updating that bitch. Just saying, I hate the new internet where I have to look at a million places!

• They used to have lots of shows and some of the ability to work the hype machine that Myles seems to be interested in. Now, it seems, shows are infrequent and I always get wind of them last minute.



• They've promising a new album and that they're still a band and stuff, but its been a while. Its like they're that friend who's always promising to make you a mix tape but then never deliver

What happened? Celebrity sized drug problems? Citizens Here and Abroad was more of a money maker. Jane became completely obsessed with sexy video game play? Actually I heard one of them moved and I'm sure they're just as well put together and good looking as ever. And, they're playing a show at the retox lounge out in the dogpatch, which i guess might still be San Francisco's up and coming neighborhood but is totally not out in the middle of nowhere now that the T line is running. I always notice this place when I'm in the neighborhood and now there's a reason to check it out!

Hip hop artists are notorious for having MySpace pages that are WAY too pimped. "Pimped profiles" crash browsers, look stupid, and are generally very off putting. I wonder if anyone has ever told them that?

Tequila obviously isn't a web designer, but let's not hold that against her. She has an awesome song featuring Assassin called "Go Dumb Girl" that you should DEFINITELY check out. It's more classic than nostalgic - while sounding fresh, silly and mature all at the same time. Tequila is from the North Oakland area - and has been releasing material for at least ten years. Girl needs some success. Go dumb girl.
