influx of the wave, pt. 2

Speaking of photos, there's a bunch from the last time I went down to LA with Hard Place.

The kids down in LA are kinda totally fun. A party with three bands that doesn't start until 11? Announced kinda last minute? They are there. No, they're even fashionably late -- while up north we're all heading home at that time. This party was super fun. A Monster America party for the Fourth of July with Logo Moi, Hot Tub, and Hard Place. Logo Moi is super enthusiastic and friendly with keyboards, guitar and drums. A kind of twee pop I never envisoned myself liking, but its growing on me mostly due to this band's stage presence and the quirky nature of the songs. Song introductions (and the occasional song I'll wager) come to a screeching halt so that the band can introduce the audience to somebody they met just before their set. Honestly, they're really happy you came so don't be a jerk and miss them at the Stork Club this month.

CIMG1887.JPG

Next was this band Hot Tub, from Oakland by way of the White Rapper Show, played. From what I heard, I think they think that being from Oakland is all you need to do to rap. They're kinda old school, maybe retro even. Very 2005. Ok, actually I heard somebody in the audience say that so its totally ok for me to hate on this band because I'm not the only one (for once).

Then Hard Place came out and reminded us what this nation is all about: rock 'n roll, budweiser and girl on girl action covered in whipped cream. Check:

Janet called, she wants her hat back.

Acquaintance Patrik Sandberg of West Add radio's most listened-to radio show and blog, Cobain In a Coma, believes he is in Rhythm Nation- when he is in fact not.

Last Halloween Patrik sat in my apartment dissatisfied with his ramshackle straight-guy costume. I thought he looked okay in regular jeans; and the Nascar T was fun. Really it was. But nonetheless Patrik looked sad. Way sad. Now, I don't remember how it happend, but I suggested my Janet Jackson Rhythm Nation cap. We put the hat on his head, some black and white clothing AND ta-da! Rhythm Nation backup dancer!

But what started off as a cute Halloween costume has now turned into an every-other day outfit. Go to his party on Saturday. He'll probably be wearing my hat. Snatch it off that redhead and return it to me emkay thnx. I hope it doesn't smell like Chochella. It belongs on one of my teddy bears.

Dethrone the queen Saturday @ Thee Parkside plz MK thnx.

Dude, LOTS of lesbians almost died near 24th and St. Francis on Sunday. Photographer Christelle Imperial de Castro filmed the aftermath. She makes a cUtE cameo in some sort of Mickey Mouse Michael Jaskson paperboy-like outfit. So basically, the haterz need to stop shooting at lesbians. Stop shooting at lesbians K thnx cause if they die no 1 will be able to take good pix of yer band.

MySpace Page Of The Week!

From Chicago, the long defunct Happy Supply. Why pick a band that no longer exists as the MySpace Page of the WeeK? Because your band stinks, o.k., and Ian (who went on to be in the Pony's and the extremely awesome Submarine Races) put up some demo versions of songs never before available.

Enjoy!

Actually Screwed

Actually Huizenga - 5 Guys chopped & screwed by the Passionistas

Actually Huizenga makes me upset. She is extremely productive, good at everything, younger than me... and makes out with more guys. I stumbled upon her song "5 Guys" via MySpace about a week ago. And. I have to be honest, I am usually not touched by any music via MySpace -BUT- "5 Guys" got to me 4 real. Still- it wasn't good enough. So I changed it.

Presenting Actually Huizenga's "5 Guys" chopped & screwed by the Passionistas. It's WAY better than the original. And it's a WFISF exclusive.

If you're wondering who I am, my name is Myles. I'm new here. I ran into the blogboys at Lady last night and they asked me to contribute. I'm gonna be posting remixes, reviews, LOLZ, full body shots, and like whatevers. So leave me alone and download this song blogasaurus.

Shameless In San Francisco

Hello Dear Readers,

We are sad to say that unless more go up, this is the last installment in the unintentionally hilarious Oprah Billboard series but that's not what we're here to talk about.

We're here to talk about Shameless In San Francisco. This is a feature where you put us on your guest list and we'll review your show. It's as simple as that. If we can't make it we'll send our friend Dominic. So send us an e-mail or post a comment inviting us to your show, if we can make it and you put us on the guest list, we'll review your band and take lots of photos. Not a bad deal.

Why would you want WFISF to review your band? I don't know, who reads this blog anyway. I'll tell you who reads it:

1. Our Friends, some people actually like us! We love you. Your band stinks!

2. Bands who google their own name in hopes that someone has written about them, then when they see we've made fun of them for selling underwear or something completely ridiculous like threatening to rent the mexican party bus to round up a group of hecklers they get mad at us! We don't advertise, nobody has written about WFISF so you people who read this website are people who google your own band names and you are totally being called out right now. If you're going to google your band name in hopes that someone has written about you, you are a legitimate target for being made fun of. There's no such thing as bad publicity.

3. And last but not least, people who work at Fuzz.com. These people get paid to google the bands that they are promoting. HI! We're glad you read our blog. Good luck with your internet venture. Your site often freezes our browser and we hope you work out the bugs.

O.K. so anyway. Put us on your guestlist and we'll review your show.

An Open Letter To Excuses For Skipping

Dear Excuses For Skipping,

Word on the street is that you all are not exactly happy with World Famous In San Francisco. First off, if we hurt anyone's feelings we'd like to sincerely apologize. That wasn't our intention, we we're trying to be funny. Most likely, you're still not laughing, I know, but give us a chance to explain.

What you might not realize is that most of the people we make fun of on this blog are people we are friends with and really love a lot. The Lovemakers for instance. Bart Davenport, for instance. Sugar and Gold for instance. These are people we've played tons of shows with, partied with, gosh even attended funerals with and have genuinely been really supportive of one another. We are writing an open letter to you because we don't really know you and you can only write open letters to people you don't know and we realized that you might not understand that some of our friends really like it and laugh about it when we make fun of them on this blog. We can see how others, who don't know us and do not know when we're joking might be put off. That being said, sometimes a friends music just isn't someone's cup of tea, or perhaps you heard a song and hated it but then when you find out what the song is actually about you end up really liking it. We don't know. We just love music and we love Don Rickles. Are we getting anywhere with you?

We were/are trying to spoof internet culture. (i.e. the LOL craze, bitchy gossip sites, web journals, fuzz.com, myspace, and last but not least open letters) Maybe we did it a little too well. (Have you noticed how all the negative posts get all the comments? There are many more positive reviews about bands on this site then there are negative posts, unfortunately they tend to go unnoticed.) Feelings have been hurt and for that we're sorry, but the negative posts seem to bring in more readers so basically, a blog's gotta do what a blog's gotta do.

You know, some people have accused Elton Tom of being a pathetic attempt at mimicking Perez Hilton when in fact that's what his older brothers and sisters, who constantly made fun of him, called him in the 70's. He was a totally lazy gay kid who worshipped and played elton John songs on the piano all day long. In the context of creating this spoof called World Famous In San Francisco, it all just fell into place. We basically grew up being made fun of, and, I might add that we liked it very much.

Well, at least we have a sense of humor, which, like music, might not be everyone's cup of tea. Remember, there's no such thing as bad publicity. Anyway, you all are on the road right now and for that we think you rock. We're hoping we can be friends. If not for real, then at least on myspace.

much love and success to you,

World Famous In San Francisco

World Famous in SF Field Trip! Sat. July 21st!

Hello dear readers,

We love you, especially those of you out there who leave comments. To celebrate we're having a field trip, but not just anybody can come along. Where are we going? How will we get there? Who's going to pay for it? Will there be food?

Here's the poop, Jeremy Smears just came back from Vegas with a buttload of cash. So we've purchased 30 tickets to the upcoming Lovemakers/Honeycut show on Saturday July 21st. at Bimbo's. We're serious, we've even reserved the Mexican Party Bus and plan on stopping for dinner at the Silver Crest Diner (on us!) at 7 p.m.

I know what your thinking, World Famous in SF has savaged and ravaged both of these bands on this website. What's the deal? Keep reading, you'll find out.

We expect to arrive at Bimbo's, on the bus at 9 p.m. so we might miss the opening band, Everest. Anyway, do you want free tickets and dinner or donuts plus cocktails at the Silver Crest diner, mexican party bus with keg, lots of perscription drugs and free condom giveaway? (we recommend you bring a flask)

What do you have to do to win a Permission Slip? Well funny you should ask. All you have to do is post a comment that states what you would scream i.e. heckle at both Honeycut and the Lovemakers if you were in the front row at the show. The 15 most hilarious comments get a World Famous in SF Permission slip which will gain you and a guest entry on the mexican party bus. Once on the bus you'll get your ticket for Bimbo's.

Come on hecklers, I know you've got it in you, and who doesn't love a good heckler? I know what I'm going to yell! ("Fuzz.com, Fuzz.com!" at the Lovemakers and "Jamiroquai!" at Honeycut.) But here's the catch, you have to promise that you'll stand in the front row with all of us and yell out your award winning comment, if you don't we won't give you a ride home AND we'll be really mad at you. How cool is it to be dropped off at home on the Mexican Party Bus? For those of you who do not get a permission slip there will be runner up prizes as well, we have three t-shirts (American Apparel) to choose from:

1. AIDS Happens

2. I Don't Have AIDS, But My Boyfriend Does

3. Nobody Knows I Have AIDS

If that's not an incentive to come up with a good heckle I don't know what is. Don't let us down, we don't want to be the only people there heckling Honeycut and the Lovemakers.

influx of the wave, part 1

A few weeks ago we went down to the OC & LA for some shows with Hard Place, remember? You didn't think we weren't going to share our California adventure did you? Its totally cool for me to write about Hard Place since I'm not in the band. Seriously!

Actually, there isn't much to write about for the first portion of our trip. Elton is sick and I get to drive us down to the OC for a half an hour show at The Clinic. Originally this was supposed to be a five band bill with Curls and The Bubonic Plague, but Curls broke up (total trauma 2007 I guess) and The Bubonic Plague miss a lot of shows. The plague will take it out of you. We get there and its almost hilarious how disorganized it is -- "Oh... Hard Place... um, I guess there'll be three bands playing tonight then". Except not really since one of the other bands was Actually Huizenga, otherwise known as Ashley from Hard Place because the club got the band's name wrong.

FYI, traffic was terrible. It took us three hours to get from just north of LA down to Huntington Beach. The rest of Hard Place leave around six and we're worried if there's really only one band playing tonight. But they showed up around the same time as us because, as it was explained to me, of the influx of the wave. They also bring news that Logo Moi is playing so we're up to three bands! Then we wait for a long time in the car and watch a weird Chinese man.

First up is Ploon whose myspace page I had a hard time finding -- "Its easy, its spelled like it sounds!", except I thought Ploon would be spelled Plune. What do I know? Anyway, these guys do a noise thing and had the privilege of performing it for hard place and me and the nice people working at The Clinic and nobody else. I have a love/hate relationship with the noise but these guys bring a much needed sense of humor to the affair. Its almost performance art. Check this clip, it'll explain it better than I can and its hilarious:

Apparently, and sadly, this was their last show since one of them is moving back east. Just remember that the next time you think you should sit at home instead of go out to a show. But, word on the street is that Ploon will continue as Ploon-D and Ploon-B, with each member taking on their respective coast.

Logo Moi hasn't shown up so next is Hard Place and now they have the privilege of playing for me and Ploon. And they were super good. Does that happen to you, the things you do are always super awesome when nobody's looking? Anyway, Logo Moi appear right at the end of the set and are excited to see Hard Place and that they made it and decide to play even though nobody is there to watch them because those kids are super fun. Except we left because we had to get the sick one to bed. Sad. But its cool because there's another show with hard place and Logo Moi in LA and there'll be more on that soon!

R.I.P. N-word

Thousands Put The N-word To Rest

I know this doesn't have anything to do with World Famous In San Francisco but here is it anyway.

They held a funeral today in my hometown of Detroit. A horse-drawn carriage pulled a pine casket with a black wreath on top through the streets this morning and supposedly over a thousand people showed up.

Inside the casket: the N-word.

The esteemed mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, had this to say,

“You can’t just bury the N-word. You have to bury all the nonsense that comes with it, Good riddance. Die N-word. We don’t want to see you around here no more."

I wonder what was in the casket? Was it the chain Persia was forced to wear around her neck after repeatedly saying the N-word on VH1's White Rapper Show?

last court and spark show, tonight!

Did you know? Did you care? I only ask because I was surprised to hear they were still around. What do I know? Anyway, I thought it was time to write about a band that Elton isn't in and this is all that seems to be going on. From their website:

Greetings.

Maybe you've already heard down the vibrating tracks, but for those who haven't: The Court & Spark has one more show for the foreseeable future. It's hard to say that The C&S is breaking up, as we still spend all our time together, but seeing as how we're all involved in different musical projects, it seems best to retire the C&S name for a while. We've had a good run and have had the good fortune to meet all kinds of wonderful souls as we've stumbled down the road. Thank you one and all for everything you've given us.

shameless in san francisco: dead eye's birthday bash

CIMG1721.JPG
more on flickr

Mon Cousin Belge is back! They've dropped about 500 pounds and have a new stripped down sound. Emile returned for Matt Cote's birthday and the band 'debuted' as a three piece. That is, if you don't count a house party and a some other shows they did. Considering how full on rock band they used to be, this could easily have been a disaster. Except they did those other shows so really there was no suspense on that front. With just piano, drums, and vocals the band is lean and mean. And so are the songs!

You know, whenever I know a band is just keyboards, drums, and vocals I get worried its going to sound like ben folds five, like he somehow owns that sound. Wouldn't that be the worst? The band says they play 'deep faggotry jams' which translates into something like showtunes + gospel + rock n roll. That almost sounds as bad as ben folds five but, surprisingly, it works.

At the center is Emile, a plastic surgery addict with a voice that could beat you at arm wrestling. They ran through a bunch of songs, new and old. Everything is shorter, sparser, and awesomer. The newer numbers are artsier, less bound to rock 'n roll tradition. Like, in a Talking Heads sort of way, but that could also just be the Talking Heads cover. Of the older numbers, the song Bundle of Contradictions totally benefits from the new arrangements -- its been decked out in total sixties girl group glory. I can't think of anything better than a scruffy wig clad faggot singing girl group songs.

That said, MCB hasn't fully figured out this transition. Some of the older songs benefit from the old, fuller figured sound. Without the extra instrumentation, when mistakes are made they ring out loud and clear. But on the whole, its a successful transformation.

Also up this evening was Ill Ease and Le Flange du Mal. I don't have much to say about Ill Ease. This is a one woman band with guitar, bass, and drums glued together by a few sample pedals. She runs around like a professional plate spinner trying to keep these songs moving forward, looping two and three chord riffs, simple bass groves, and drums. Its surprisingly charming, but after a while it starts to sound a bit samey. While I bet the recordings are in a similar vein, I'd be interested to see how they fare.

CIMG1860.JPGCIMG1827.JPG
Le Flange du Mal are some kind of hellish synth driven cabaret thrash core band. With trumpet. I don't think that is what their website says, but thats how I generally remember them. Most songs have moments where they freak out and instruments are played dramatically and most shows are attended by members of the bay area's hipster rock elite. Basically, what I'm saying is this is either your thing or it isn't (listen here to find out). It happens to be my thing and they were in fine form this evening, there's photos to prove it.

Whine and Spam

Is this for real? Here's a tiny bit of explanation. The lovemakers new single, Whine and Dine, was just released by fuzz.com. Fuzz.com is a new type of myspace, except they have a label and are more band promotion focused. Well, it seems they weren't so subtle promoting the lovemaker's new single. Here's my favorite posting:
